The game is indeed afoot as Geek Nation Tours proudly announces our first ever Sherlock tour. For fans of the incredible BBC series Sherlock, this tour will take you to a wide variety of locations in the UK, visiting Wales, Bristol, and of course London, home of the brilliant and unique Sherlock Holmes.
Feel the fear as you venture into Dewer’s Hollow in The Hounds of Baskerville. Enjoy lunch at Simpson-in-the-Strand, where Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a regular visitor. Follow in the footsteps of Holmes and Watson as we discover the same route they used to chase down a taxi in A Study in Pink. Hold back the tears (we all know they were there) as you recall Sherlock’s unique, but touching best man speech at Goldney Hall, scene of the wedding reception in The Sign of Three. And see if you can solve the mystery of how Sherlock Holmes faked his own suicide when visiting St Bartholomews from The Reichenbach Fall. And of course, we will be stopping off outside 221B Baker Street, home of our beloved hero. And much, much more.
As well as the tour, there will be activities to take part in. As part of our gaming evening you can test your own sleuthing skills with Sherlock Cluedo, or follow in the footsteps of the Holmes family with a ‘friendly’ game of Operation. Enjoy a pint (or two, or many) to celebrate the marriage of the Watson’s as we visit all the pubs from John’s stag night (don’t worry, we’ll make sure you have the morning to recover). Present your own innovative, entertaining or just plain outlandish theory as to how Sherlock faked his suicide. You’ll even get the chance to do your own detecting in our murder mystery dinner.
Sound good? Well there’s more. You will get to marvel at the famous London skyline in our own private capsule on the London Eye. Find out more about the history of our favorite consulting detective (admittedly the only one in the world) at the Sherlock Holmes museum. Have your picture taken with Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch! (well, a highly detailed realistic waxwork of him) when we visit Madame Tussauds world famous waxworks.
That’s fantastic!’ – John Watson
Well that’s kind of you to say Dr. Watson. So what do you say my fellow budding detectives, will you join us on this packed and informative insight into the world of Sherlock?
Day 1 – Friday April 14th
Today everyone will arrive from around the world and your tour representative will be on hand to welcome you and your fellow travellers to the tour. You will be given detailed instructions on how to make your way to the hotel and meet up with the rest of the tour participants. But be sure to arrive early as your tour guide be heading off to visit to the Tower of London. Here is where Moriarty breaks in to the crown jewels and introduces himself to the world in his own flamboyant manner in The Reichenbach Fall. Make sure you don’t linger too long planning your own heist as there will be a Welcome Dinner back at the hotel so that everyone can get to know each other better, or you could just try and work out who everyone is by studying their appearance.
Day 2 – Saturday April 15th
The day starts with a splendid view of London from up high in the comfort of a private capsule on the London Eye. The London Eye is not only seen in the opening credits of Sherlock but it is the best possible place to get a stunning view of London. Here we will take in the sites and get our bearings for the days ahead.
After this your tour representative will be taking you around some film locations from the BBC series, including Buckingham Palace from A Scandal in Belgravia, as well as Westminster underground station and The Houses of Parliament from The Empty Hearse.
Then its lunch (included) at the Sherlock Holmes pub! You will get to enjoy your meal alongside a replica of Holmes’ and Watson’s sitting room and study. This room is given pride of place adjacent to the restaurant, where diners are able to view the whole area through a large glass partition, with additional viewing space through windows located in the hallway.
After lunch you can relax in the comfort of a coach as we are taken on a tour of all things Sherlock with a local guide. The tour will start at the very place where Holmes and Watson first meet and take in literary sites from gentlemen’s clubs to grand hotels featured in some of the novels and short stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. You’ll get to visit many of the film and TV locations and inspirations in the capital featured in screen adaptations with Jeremy Brett, Benedict Cumberbatch and Robert Downey Jr. Along the way you’ll have plenty of opportunities to take pictures and see the locations up close.
You’ll enjoy a great evening meal (included) at one of London’s fine restaurants, before heading back for a return visit to the London Eye, as you’ll get to take in the wonders of London lit up in the night sky.
Day 3 – Sunday April 16th
The morning is yours to do some of your own investigating. Then we’ll be enjoying a fine lunch at Simpson’s-in-the-Strand, regular haunt for Sherlock Holmes and his creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
This will be followed up with more location visits with your tour representative, so make sure you’ve brought your best walking shoes. This will include the South Bank skate park & Chinatown from The Blind Banker giving you the opportunity to buy your own lucky cat, The Old Bailey used as the exterior of the courthouse in The Reichenbach Fall, and St. Barts hospital, where you can lie down and take photos of your own faked death.
The evening will consist of an enjoyable meal (included) in the opulence of the Criterion Restaurant, another regular visiting place for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This will be followed by a tour of the Holmes and Watson taxi chase in A Study in Pink (don’t worry, you won’t have to run on a full stomach).
Day 4 – Monday April 17th
Day four begins with a trip to 23-24 Leinster Gardens, false façade hiding the London underground tracks from His Last Vow. You will then get to take the train that passes under the façade. This will take us onto the next stage of the day, spending the rest of the morning at 221 B Baker Street and the Sherlock Holmes Museum, and yes, they have a wonderful gift shop so don’t forget your spending money. From here you’ll have time to enjoy a spot of lunch before the next activity.
The afternoon will be dedicated to meeting all manner of famous people, including Mr. Benedict Cumberbatch himself. Well, wax models of them anyway, as you get some fantastic photo opportunities at Madame Tussauds waxworks. This would be the perfect opportunity to dress up as your favorite Sherlock character.
In the evening, your tour representative will be putting on a games evening back at the hotel including Sherlock Cluedo, chess, and the Holmes family favourite, Operation. Your tour representative will be reserving places for lunch and dinner for the group, or you are free to organise your own meals throughout the day.
Day 5 – Tuesday April 18th
It’s time to move to another popular part of the UK used for filming Sherlock as you’ll board a coach to Cardiff in Wales, and enjoy some of the finest countryside the British Isles has to offer. There will be a quiz on the journey to test your Sherlock knowledge and deductive skills, so bring your thinking cap, or deerstalker.
After lunch you can join your tour rep and visit some more filming locations. First of will be Cardiff Castle, used to film the Moriarty crown jewels break in, from The Reichenbach Fall. Following this you’ll see the Haydn Ellis building, the hospital Sherlock stays at after being shot in His Last Vow, and finally the School of Chemistry, used as Roland Kerr College in A Study in Pink.
We will finish the day with some fine Italian dining at Giovanni’s (included), where Sherlock enjoyed a meal in the company of Charles Augustus Magnussen in His Last Vow.
Day 6 – Wednesday April 19th
You will have a packed day of sight seeing with your tour representative by coach and foot, taking in the following sites. You’ll relive the terror of The Hounds of Baskerville at Dewer’s Hollow, before heading for lunch at The Bush Inn, the pub used as The Cross Keys Inn.
In the afternoon there will be a tour of the BBC Studio in Cardiff where you’ll discover how television programs are made and find out about radio programs broadcast on BBC Radio Wales and BBC Radio Cymru. And if that’s not enough, you’ll also have a go at creating your own news bulletin or taking part in an interactive radio drama.
Again your tour representative will be reserving a place for dinner for the group, or you are free to organize your own meal.
After dinner, make sure you have your ‘glass measuring cylinder’ on hand as we follow in the footsteps of Holmes and Watson’s stag night pub crawl in The Sign of Three. Your tour representative will be on hand with post-it notes and pens to play 20 questions and Geek Nation Tours will buy the first round.
Day 7 – Thursday April 20th
After a relaxing morning (recovering from the previous night’s intoxication) it’s back on the coach to head to another Sherlock filming location. In the South West of England, Bristol has played host to some key scenes in Sherlock.
After booking into the hotel you’ll get to visit Bristol South swimming pool, where Holmes and Watson first meet Moriarty in The Great Game. Bring your bathing suit because we are definitely going for a swim.
In the evening, after dinner (included), you’ll have the opportunity to present your own take on how Sherlock faked his death in The Reichenbach Fall. Prizes will be given for the most ingenious and inventive ideas. Your tour representative will also collect your votes on which Sherlock episodes you want to watch on our Saturday drive back to London.
Day 8 – Friday April 21st
Heading out on a coach, today is about the celebrating the union of the Watson’s in The Sign of Three, so bring your hankies. You’ll start by visiting St Mary’s Church, John and Mary Watson’s wedding scene. Then it’s on to Goldney Hall House and Gardens, where the wedding reception was held and Sherlock gave one of the most unique and touching best man speeches ever heard.
You will have the evening free to relax and take in the city of Bristol, as we’ll be heading back to London in the morning.
Day 9 – Saturday April 22nd
The day will start with a relaxing coach journey back to London. Once you’ve settled back into your hotel room you will have the afternoon to yourself, visit more famous sites, go shopping on Regent’s St, or reward your patient spouse with a matinee theatre show. As always, your tour representative will be happy to help you with suggestions of places to visit.
The tour will end in the evening in style. You will be given the chance to truly test your sleuthing skills, as you’ll take part in a murder mystery dinner. Enjoy a three course meal, study the clues and solve the mystery. Just make sure you stay alive before dessert is served!
