About the Tour

Join Geek Nation Tours on a voyage across the Sundering Seas to the realm of Middle Earth. More commonly known as the land of New Zealand, we will journey from north to south and visit filming locations from Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. We’ll also partake in a handful of experiences to place ourselves right inside of the story itself. And yes, we WILL walk right into Mordor! We are offering a seven day tour of the north island, a seven day tour of the south island, or a thirteen day tour of both islands. Check out the itinerary below to decide which tour package is right for you. Whichever route you take, it is sure to be the Unexpected Journey of a lifetime!

Tour Itinerary

Day 1 - Wellington to Nelson (Thursday, Feb. 21, 2019) / BONUS DAY – The Adventure Continues

If you book both the North and South portions of the tour, you will be treated to an extra experience while traveling between the two islands. We’ll depart Wellington in the morning and board a ferry to The Undying Lands. Wait, sorry, the ferry actually only goes to Picton. We’ll make sure to feed ourselves during the journey as we’ll need our strength on our next adventure.

Once we reach the harbor in Picton, we’ll board a coach and travel to the Pelorous River where we’ll meet up with the outfitters at Kayak New Zealand. These paddling professionals will get us ready and equipped for a Hobbit Kayak tour of the river. Our band of travelers will follow the same route as Bilbo, Thorin, and the rest of the barrel-riding dwarves in The Desolation of Smaug. The adventure will last the entire afternoon but if we’re lucky we’ll avoid any encounter with angry wood elves or aggressive orcs.

In the evening we’ll continue on to Nelson where we’ll join up with the rest of our South Island traveling companions at our “Welcome Dinner” in the hotel restaurant. Here, you’ll get to know the new members of your fellowship and your GNT Tour Leader may call on you to help explain the coming days in more detail in an effort not to repeat anything.

Tour Notes

If this sounds like your kind of adventure, we’d be glad to have you join us. The journey can be booked as either a North Island, South Island, or combination tour. However, keep in mind that space for both islands is limited and we ask that you please notify us of which option you would like at the time of booking. Remember that the Hobbit Kayak Tour is only available to guests booking the combination tour. We’ll be excited to see what kind of halflings, elves, dwarves, goblins, orcs, Mithrandir, and men (and women) share in this amazing once-in-a-lifetime adventure!

Please note: The North Island Tour features an average amount of walking during location visits and tours and includes the extended hike over the Tongariro Crossing. The tour is recommended for individuals with average and above levels of physical fitness (however, guests will have the option of skipping the Tongariro hike). The South Island Tour also features an average amount of walking during location visits as well as a short hike up and down Mount Sunday (30 minutes each way). The tour is recommended for everyone.
